How to Prepare for your Outdoor Boudoir Session

Washington River Outdoor Boudoir

Taking your boudoir photos out in Mother Nature can be so magical and healing, but only if properly prepared for! Here are some things to consider when you go to prepare for your outdoor boudoir session.

Sunscreen

Although I prefer shooting in the evenings, the sun can still be pretty harsh – especially for those of us in the PNW who aren’t used to seeing it for 10 months of the year!

Even if you think you might not need it, wear your sunscreen. I suggest putting it on your face and body before the hair and makeup artist begins your makeup.

Bug Spray

Being out in nature means there is the chance for a plethora of insects and potential bug bites (sounds enticing to be out there, doesn’t it?!). Especially since you will be outside and interacting with the scenery, it is a great idea to wear insect repellant.

Allergy Medicine

If you struggle with allergies, please make sure you have taken the allergy medicine that works for you. Puffy, red, itchy skin is never fun when you’ve had your hair and makeup done and are looking like a goddess!

WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR OUTDOOR SHOOT

A water bottle and snacks!

Even though we will be having a blast, you will be working hard during your shoot! Climbing over rocks, through the river, over the trees (ok kidding on that last one), but there will be some physicality involved, and it’s really important to stay hydrated and your body fueled properly.

Something simple as a banana, trail mix, or string cheese does wonders for your energy levels and can help you from feeling “hangry”.

Sandals/Watershoes

You will most likely be walking over river rocks, which can sometimes be sharp and jagged. Wear sandals or something that you won’t mind getting dirty and wet.

Towels and Extra Clothes

Unless you really do not want to get wet, most outdoor boudoir sessions end in the water. I get in, you get in, and we create magic in the rivers and lakes! That being said, you’ll need something to dry off with after we’re all finished.

Water straight from the mountaintops is never warm, so I recommend bringing a set of warm clothes to jump into afterwards.

Towels

We most likely end our session in a river or lake, and you will get wet! Bring a towel and an extra change of comfortable clothes for after the session.

Possible Passersby

I try my best to find locations that are set back away from the public, but I typically shoot in WA State parks, so there is always the chance of someone happening upon us. If you feel really uncomfortable with this, I recommend booking an AirBnB with private land, or even a private studio setting.

WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR OUTDOOR BOUDOIR SESSION

Now that you know how to prepare for your outdoor boudoir session, you can focus on the what to wear! See my blog on outdoor ideas for lingerie and outfits here. I like to find inspiration from Mother Nature herself, whether in colors (greens, browns, blues, yellows), or materials that flow and move in the wind and with your body. Lace, satin, and chiffon are all great choices, as well as airy robes, sheer and lacy dresses, and tulle skirls.

PROPS AND ACCESSORIES

I love the creativity Mother Nature inspires! You can incorporate props and accessories such as fresh flowers, jewelry, headpieces (think Goddess!) and hats.

WA STATE PARK PERMIT

Most of the locations I find are within the Washington State Parks, and you will need a permit to park your vehicle. A one day pass is $10, and a pass for the entire year is $30. You can purchase them here.
