Getting the Most Out of Your Boudoir Session

Congratulations on making the decision to love your body unapologetically, celebrate your divinity, and transform into a glorious goddess – now it’s time to prepare for your boudoir session!

Now that you’ve taken the leap to booking your photoshoot, you might be wondering exactly how to get ready for your special day.

Don’t you worry, I’ve outline a list of things to do (and not to do) to make your boudoir session the most relaxed, fun, and awesome experience ever!

Let’s get started with the “To-Do’s”!

Downtown Seattle Boudoir Grand Hyatt

Prior to Your Boudoir Session – Make Sure You’re All Set For Hair and Makeup!

We hire the best hair and makeup artists to glam you up and make you look and feel like the most gorgeous version of yourself. It’s an awesome way to relax and have a great conversation before your shoot!

The look you choose for both your hair and makeup is up to you! It’s important to go for a look and style that you resonate with and makes you feel like an absolute goddess. Please bring examples of what you have in mind so that your hair and makeup artist can make your dreams come true!

When you arrive, your hair should be clean and dry, and your face should be clean with only moisturizer on.

Brow Grooming and Facial Hair Removal

Please make sure that your brows are groomed – either tweezed, waxed or threaded, at least 2-5 days before your session, depending on how sensitive your skin is. It’s important to have cleaned-up brows because it will make a world of difference in how your face will look. And removing any other unwanted skin beforehand will also benefit how the makeup will blend into the skin.

If you choose to remove hair from any other part of your body, please do that the day of or night before as well.

Exfoliate Your Face, Lips and Body!

Depending if your body is used to it, exfoliate the night before and the day of your session. This can be done with a washcloth and cleanser or a gentle scrub. This will allow the nature glow of your skin to shine as well as making it easier for your makeup to look flawless.

For your lips, you can get a special exfoliator, make one from simple household ingredients (check out this list here), or just use your toothbrush and gently massage.

Moisturize And Hydration

Moisturizing is the key to dewy and glowy goddess skin! Hopefully you already have a great routine of doing this morning and night. But whether you do or don’t, moisturize the night before AND morning of your boudoir shoot. Drinking lots of water before the day of your shoot is also key, as hydrated skin is smoother and fills out fine lines, plumps up the skin, and makes you look and feel radiant!

Hair Preparation

Arrive to your photo session with clean, air-dried hair, worn down and not in a ponytail or tied up to avoid marks/dents in it.

Do NOT come with straight-ironed hair unless you want straight hair for your photos. Previously straightened hair will make the look of soft waves or curls much more difficult to achieve.

Prepare to Work at Your Boudoir Session!

A boudoir photoshoot is most likely different than any other photoshoot you’ve ever done. You’ll be put into positions that you aren’t normally in, and this can make you feel like you’ve just had a workout!

It’s important to move and stretch lightly before arriving, but not too much that you’re tired before you even begin. We will also do some light movement and stretching after you

Choose Clothes That You Would Actually Wear and Suits Your Body Type

I want you to feel as sexy and beautiful as you possibly can, and what you choose to wear has a big impact on how you feel and move during your session.

I recommend picking outfits – whether that means a large, stretchy oversized shirt to lacy and strappy lingerie – that make YOU feel good.

You can choose what style it is based on your body type and comfort level.

Love your stomach? A two-piece lingerie set would be good!

Don’t feel as confident about your stomach? A bodysuit is a great option!

Check out the article about how to choose clothes that fit your body here.

Don’t Wear a Bra!

Make sure to arrive in loose-fitting clothing to your session and no bra or tight panties. This is to prevent lines in your skin, which can sometimes take the entire length of the session to go away.

My clients always laugh at how they arrive looking like “hobos” – with undone hair, oversized sweatpants, t-shirts, carrying bags of clothes and wearing no makeup. If this is how you look on your way to your shoot, then you’re doing it right!

Body Areas to Avoid and Handling Trauma

As your boudoir photographer, I want to know which body parts you want me to highlight and which ones you rather not show

I understand that the journey to fully embracing every part of ourselves is different for everyone, and it’s important to recognize and honor exactly where you are in yours. Sometimes it can be hard to openly talk about these, so there’s no explanation needed as to why you want to avoid a certain area!

Don’t Forget the Accessories!

Make sure you have all the earrings, heels, and accessories you want for your shoot already in your bag the night before! You can bring hair pieces, socks, fishnet stockings, men’s ties, etc!

Get Your Beauty Sleep

I know you’ll be excited and possibly nervous, but make sure you get plenty of rest the night before. Getting at least 8 hours of sleep the week before is even better!

Now you’re all prepared for your boudoir session! We can’t wait to see you soon for your boudoir session!
